What to expect with PAE

Happy middle aged man reclining on deck chair in garden As your body changes, it’s essential to keep up with your prostate health. Many men over the age of 65 have been affected by symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

However, with Prostate Artery Embolization, or PAE your symptoms can be drastically improved, and restore your quality of life.

Signs of An Enlarged Prostate

An enlarged prostate means that the gland has increased in size, which is common among most men as they age. An enlarged prostate, commonly referred to as BPH does not increase your risk of developing cancer. While there is no cure, paying attention to the signs of BPH, and getting it under control is essential.

Some Indicators of an enlarged prostate include:

  • Erectile disfunction
  • Bloody Urine
  • Incomplete Urination
  • Frequent Urination
  • Incontinence
  • And straining to Urinate

When PAE is Necessary

Mild symptoms of BPH are treated with medication such as alpha-blockers, along with carefully monitoring your condition. PAE may be an option for you if you are experiencing severe symptoms and if medication has not brought you relief. If you are opposed to more traditional methods of surgery to correct the issue, Prostate Artery Embolization is worth considering.

Success Rate of PAE

While it does take time to experience relief, PAE has one of the highest success rates for minimally invasive procedures. Studies have reported that 75-80% of Prostate Artery Embolization patients reported improvement lasting over three years.

Recovery

Your procedure will take about 2 hours to complete. Once the surgery is over, you can expect to need between 2 and 4 hours to recover after your procedure before you’re discharged. Most patients experience pain relief within a month of their surgery along with continued improvement. Some of the side effects to be mindful of are, Urinary tract infections, rectal bleeding, and increased urination for about a week after the procedure.
